The Jeep Renegade is a compelling option in the subcompact SUV segment. Customers can choose between two powerful engines, and four-wheel-drive is available, which is quite rare for this size class. The Trailhawk, with its rock-crawling technology, is better off-road than Japanese or American competitors. I noticed the Renegade was added to Truecar. (First I've seen invoice prices). The 2020 Jeep Renegade possesses strong off-road capability and user-friendly technology, but its sluggish acceleration, poor fuel economy, and bad predicted reliability rating push it toward the bottom half of our subcompact SUV rankings.
The Renegade is a decent vehicle. It’s one of the most capable off-roaders in the subcompact SUV class, especially its Trailhawk trim. Other highlights include quality cabin materials and a good amount of passenger space. However, it’s held back by a slow-shifting transmission, a short standard features list, and poor gas mileage estimates.
If you’re looking for a well-rounded SUV, you may want shop elsewhere. But if you plan to frequently drive your SUV over off-road trails, the Jeep Renegade is a good choice. Still, there are several other small SUVs that offer solid off-road performance. The Jeep Compass is just as capable as the Renegade, and it provides additional cabin room. The Subaru Crosstrek has solid off-road capability and offers more standard features and passenger space.
The 2020 Renegade is part of a generation that started with the 2015 model year. There have been a few notable changes since.
For 2018, Jeep added a 5-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, and a rearview camera to the standard features list and made Android Auto and Apple CarPlay available. For the 2019 model year, Jeep updated the Renegade's styling, introduced an optional turbocharged engine, and made adaptive cruise control, front parking sensors, and parallel and perpendicular park assist available. The only notable change for 2020 is that the entry-level Sport and Latitude models are now available with more options.
We recommend opting for the 2019 Renegade. It's nearly identical to the new Jeep Renegade but likely less expensive.

At $22,275, the base 2020 Renegade Sport trim has an above-average starting price for the subcompact SUV class. The Trailhawk trim starts at $27,794, and the top-of-the-line High Altitude trim starts at $28,640.

The Jeep Compass is a compact SUV that is very similar to the Renegade. Both models feature the same underwhelming base engine, and both are proficient off-roaders. There are a few differences, however. The Renegade is more stable around corners, and it's available with a turbocharged engine. The Compass offers more passenger and cargo space than the Renegade, and it comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. The better pick here comes down to your needs and preferences.
The Subaru Crosstrek is inferior to the Jeep when it comes to off-roading, and it has a weaker base engine, but it ranks higher in the subcompact SUV class for several reasons. The Crosstrek features roomier seats, better fuel economy, and more standard features than the Renegade. The only reason to choose the Renegade over the Crosstrek is if you want the Jeep's off-road prowess.
There's seating for up to five people in the Renegade. Both rows have a generous amount of headroom, and front-row legroom is spacious. Rear-seat legroom is tight, however. Cloth seats are standard, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, leather upholstery, and heated front seats are available.
The Renegade provides two full sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats, as well as an upper tether for the rear middle seat. The upper tethers are hard to find, and the lower anchors are set too deep in the seats and are difficult to maneuver around.
The Renegade features a well-constructed interior composed of quality materials. Though this Jeep features some hard plastics, critics say they don't look cheap.
Cargo space is on par with that of many class rivals. There's 18.5 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats and 50.8 cubic feet when those seats are folded flat. The cargo bay has a high load floor and a narrow opening, however.
The Renegade’s standard Uconnect infotainment system is straightforward and easy to use. The 5-inch touch screen works well, and there are physical controls in addition to the touch screen. The system also comes standard with voice control, Bluetooth, a USB port, and six speakers. Available features include a 7- or 8.4-inch touch screen, a nine-speaker premium audio system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, navigation, HD Radio, and satellite radio.

The Renegade comes standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 180 horsepower. A 177-horsepower turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder is available. Both engines are paired with a sluggish nine-speed automatic transmission. While neither engine provides great acceleration, models with the turbo-four are quicker.
With the standard 2.4-liter engine and front-wheel drive, the 2020 Renegade delivers an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. That's low for the class. Models with the available turbocharged engine and front-wheel drive get 2 more mpgs in the city and on the highway.
On pavement, the Renegade offers a pretty comfortable ride with precise steering and poised handling. It also maintains a composed ride over bumpy roads. Front-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive is available.
Off-road performance is the Renegade's strong suit. Even the base model is tuned to tackle rough terrain. However, frequent off-roaders should shell out extra money for the Trailhawk trim. It features four-wheel drive, tow hooks, all-terrain tires, a traction management system, skid plates, and a higher ride height.
The Renegade can tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped.
The 2020 Jeep Renegade has a terrible predicted reliability rating of two out of five from J.D. Power.
The 2020 Renegade comes with a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
The cost of insuring a Jeep Renegade will depend on a variety of factors, including your deductible, the level of coverage that you want, and the type of insurance that you choose. Your age, gender, location, credit score, and driving record can also have an impact on your insurance rates. Check out our car insurance guide to find the best policy for you.
Neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has crash tested the 2020 Renegade at the time of writing.
The only standard advanced safety feature in the 2020 Renegade is a rearview camera. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, parallel and perpendicular park assist, and automatic high-beam headlights are optional.
The 2020 Renegade is roughly 13.9 feet long, and its curb weight ranges from 3,159 to 3,527 pounds.
Jeep builds the 2020 Renegade in Italy.
The 2020 Renegade comes in four main trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. Three limited edition trims are also available: Upland, Altitude, and High Altitude. The base Sport trim has scant features, so we recommend stepping up to at least the Latitude trim, which adds features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a larger touch screen. Additionally, the Latitude trim has several packages available to add safety, comfort, and tech features.
The Sport trim starts at $22,275 and includes a 180-horsepower four-cylinder engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. It also includes a rearview camera, cloth upholstery, and a Uconnect infotainment system with a 5-inch touch screen, a six-speaker audio system, a USB port, and Bluetooth.
The Uconnect 7.0 Group goes for $775 and includes a 7-inch touch screen, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Starting at $24,125, the Latitude trim adds a 7-inch touch screen, an additional USB port, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
Several packages are available. The Uconnect 8.4 NAV Group ($1,345) comes with an 8.4-inch touch screen, navigation, and HD Radio. The Advanced Technology Group ($1,295) includes forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, parallel and perpendicular park assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. The Cold Weather Group ($745) includes heated front seats, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a windshield wiper de-icer.
The Limited trim (MSRP: $26,645) comes with a 177-horsepower turbo-four engine, enhanced interior and exterior styling enhancements, remote start, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.
The Uconnect 8.4 NAV Group ($1,345) and Advanced Technology Group packages ($1,295) are available.
The Trailhawk trim goes for $27,795 and features the turbo-four engine, full-time four-wheel drive with low-range gearing, all-terrain tires, skid plates, a higher ride height, and tow hooks. A Selec-Terrain system is available. This lets you tailor the ride for Snow, Sand, Mud, and Rocks.
A Premium Leather Group for Trailhawk package ($1,695) adds a trunk pass-through, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, bucket seats, and a windshield wiper de-icer. The Uconnect 8.4 NAV Group package is available for $1,245.
The High Altitude trim starts at $28,640. It includes the turbo-four engine, interior and exterior styling enhancements, an 8.4-inch touch screen, navigation, and HD Radio.
The Advanced Technology Group package is available for $1,295.

The 2020 Jeep Renegade offers great off-road chops, a smooth ride, and quality cabin materials. However, it could use a stronger base engine and a more refined transmission. For a more well-rounded subcompact SUV, look elsewhere.

I’ve never been a Jeep guy but I decided to give the new 2020 Renegade a test drive. After a short drive I was sold. I absolutely love this thing. It drives very smooth and the interior is pretty quiet. There’s hardly any road noise at all. The design and quality of it is also very nice and feels solidly constructed. I think Jeep has a winner with this one.
